Our contribution to climate protection

We take our responsibility for climate protection seriously and are committed to the 1.5-degree target of the Paris Climate Agreement. Scientific findings clearly show that every additional rise in temperature caused by greenhouse gas emissions (GHG emissions) has severe consequences for the environment, society and businesses1.

Thus, we aim to comply with the 1.5-degree pathway for our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030. A target for Scope 3 emissions has not been set yet, as these were only fully recorded for the first time in 2024.

Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions -
scopes, targets and measures

Scope 1

Direct GHG emissions from company-owned activities

Example
GHG emissions from the combustion of fuels by freenet's own vehicle fleet.

Scope 2

Indirect GHG emissions from energy consumption

Example
The purchase of energy, such as electricity or district heating, for our office buildings and shops.

Scope 3

Indirect GHG emissions from the upstream and downstream value chain

Example
GHG emissions from the extraction of resources for mobile devices sold by freenet and their use by our customers.

Target for Scope 1 & 2

We aim to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by more than 60% compared to our base year (2022) by 2030, thereby bringing these emissions into line with the 1.5-degree target of the Paris Climate Agreement.

Target for Scope 3

Scope 3 emissions were measured for the first time in 2024. Accordingly, no target has yet been set.

Electrifying our vehicle fleet is a key part of our climate strategy. Switching to electric vehicles is our most effective way to decarbonise our direct GHG emissions (Scope 1). By 2030, we want to cut our vehicle-related emissions by about 97% compared to the base year 2022. In addition to purchasing electric vehicles, we are also investing in charging infrastructure at our sites and training our employees in the use of the technology.

Our electricity procurement is another key lever in achieving our climate-related goals. That is why we already procure 100% green electricity at all company locations where we can directly control our electricity procurement. Starting from the base year 2022, we aim to reduce emissions from electricity procurement by around 60% by 2030 at the latest.

We use LED lighting exclusively in our shops. We have already completed the conversion to modern, energy-efficient LED technology. This enables us to save a significant amount of electricity and reduce our power consumption. We are constantly optimising the systems as new developments in LED lighting enable even more efficient solutions. In this way, we are making a further contribution to reducing our energy consumption and achieving our climate targets.
